What is TPLO Surgery?

TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is a common surgery performed by a veterinarian at Trumbull Animal Hospital. This orthopedic surgery is for dogs who have torn their cranial cruciate ligament, also known to many in the field as a torn ACL. This effective surgery addresses the injury and helps dogs recover, providing long-term results. Learn more about this surgery below, and don't hesitate to contact our team for more information.

What Should I Know About TPLO Surgery?

Whether you're visiting an emergency vet or us at Trumbull Animal Hospital, below are important facts to know about the procedure.

- How long is the procedure?

It can take around 45 - 60 minutes.

- What does the surgery entail?

The vet will make a curved cut in the tibia from the front to the back in the shape of a half smiley face. The vet needs to change the angle of the tibial plateau. It's done by cutting the bone, rotating it, and stabilizing it in a new position with a plate and screws.

- Will my dog be in pain?

Your dog will receive appropriate medication, and the pain will be manageable. Following the surgery, you will get a prescription to help keep your dog comfortable. Unless directed otherwise, you must give your dog the medication until it's gone.

- Are there any complications?

The most common is an infection, which only happens in less than 10% of patients. Your dog will have several examinations and x-rays to ensure they are healing properly and everything was a success.

- What is the recovery process?

Most dogs can walk on the injured leg 24 hours after surgery. While not every pup is the same, most can bear moderate to total weight after about two weeks. Your dog can often go back to all physical activities after six months. It's always best to consult with your veterinarian.
