Common Food Allergies in Pets

Common Food Allergies in Pets

Having pet allergies is common, and many pets react to a pet food allergy. When your pet needs either a health exam or emergency vet care, it's important to call our Trumbull office to arrange your visit. Your pet may need care from the veterinarian, especially if its allergic symptoms are severe.

Pet Food Allergy Basics

When a pet is allergic to a food, its immune system will overreact to an ingredient that is in it. Usually, this is a type of protein causing the reaction. When this happens, there may be a lot of symptoms that tell you that there is a problem. When pets have food allergies, they often have skin inflammation as well as inflammation of their eyes, the intestines, and their entire respiratory system. Both dogs and cats will exhibit at cleat one of these systems when there is an allergic reaction. Different pet allergies to foods can also cause different reactions and symptoms.

Other Symptoms of Pet Allergies

When a pet has a pet food allergy, there is a wide range of symptoms that they may display. They may have areas of red skin, including the ears. They may rub their face and rub or bite at their paws, back, bottom, and legs. Their skin may be dry, and they may have more dandruff than before. If their hair and skin are more oily, this can also be a sign of a pet food allergy. They may have spots of eczema on the skin and have grooming behaviors, especially in cats. They can lose hair and have vomiting, diarrhea, and a lot of gas. They may get ear infections often. They may also have more bowel movements and have red or watery eyes. They may sneeze or reverse sneeze, and their face or eyes can get swollen. The symptoms may be the same as the effects of environmental allergies such as an allergy to grass or flea bites.
